Exercise 1: Conversation exercise

Instruction:

Che tipo di governo ha il tuo paese? (What government does your country have?)
Esiste una famiglia reale nel tuo paese? (Does there exist a royal family in your country?)
Sei andato nell'esercito? (Did you go to the army?)
Quando sono le elezioni? (When are the elections?)

Example phrases:

Il 7 luglio abbiamo votato per un nuovo presidente e governo.

The 7th of july we voted for a new president and government.

Il re è il capo dello stato.

The king is the head of the state.

L'ultimo governo era composto da 3 partiti politici.

The last government consisted out of 3 political parties.

Il governo è controllato dal parlamento e dai giudici.

The government is controlled by the parliament and judges.

Ho dovuto andare nell'esercito proprio come tutti i miei amici.

I had to go to the army just like all my friends.

Non sono andato al servizio militare, ma ho lavorato per un anno in un'organizzazione sociale.

I did not go to the army but I worked in a social organisation for a year instead.

Il primo ministro è cambiato dalle ultime elezioni.

The prime minister changed since the last elections.

I know there is the Parliament, the Government and the President of the Republic, but I am not very familiar with their duties.

Il Parlamento è formato da due camere: la Camera dei Deputati e il Senato, giusto?

The Parliament is made up of two houses: the House of Commons and the House of Lords, right?

Il Governo è composto dal Presidente del Consiglio e dai ministri che gestiscono i vari ministeri.

The government is composed of the Prime Minister and the ministers who manage the various departments.

Il Presidente della Repubblica rappresenta l’unità nazionale e ha funzioni di garanzia molto importanti.

The President of the Republic represents national unity and has very important guarantor functions.

The next elections will be in a few months, but the exact date has not yet been decided.

Se sei italiano e hai più di 18 anni, puoi votare senza dover fare iscrizioni particolari.

If you are Italian and over 18 years old, you can vote without needing to register separately.

Ricevi una scheda elettorale con i vari partiti e devi scegliere quello che preferisci.

You receive a ballot paper with the various parties and you have to choose the one you prefer.

Dopo la chiusura delle urne si comincia subito lo spoglio, poi si contano i voti per scegliere i nuovi rappresentanti.

After the polls close, the counting begins immediately, then the votes are tallied to choose the new representatives.

After the vote, the people who make political decisions change, so it is important to participate.

Anche un singolo voto conta, soprattutto quando le elezioni sono molto equilibrate.

Even a single vote matters, especially when the elections are very close.
